A great quality computer is essential today, whether it's a laptop or a desktop. I can't imagine not having my iMac Pro with my 27" monitor and high end graphics card. Of course, I do a lot more than writing on my desktop. I also couldn't do without Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, plus my Apple Photos software, and my other creative production software.
