Actually, the French held the first New Orleans Mardi Gras in 1699.

I never understood what MoonPies had to do with Mardi Gras and she explained that the Mardi Gras celebration began in Mobile, Alabama and they wanted a cheap snack to throw from the floats.

Actually, the French held the first New Orleans Mardi Gras in 1699. Of course, Louisiana wasn't a state then. So, only on a technicality was Alabama the first official state.
