Having been accustomed to the spelling “spic-and-span” — per the brand name of our iconic household cleanser — I wondered whether it was a matter of US versus UK variants. I conjectured that the US dropped the “k” by way of disassociation from the derogatory designation for Spanish-speaking peoples.
