But the “good guy with a gun” theory has an Achilles heel: it only works if the good guy is ready for the fight, and life doesn’t have a soundtrack to tell him the bad guys are on their way. You’ll notice Republicans always have an answer for how to stop an attack — but only in hindsight, after they knew what would happen.
