As someone who's previously worked as a proof reader and illustrator/designer for both newspapers and magazines, there's no yes or now answer to that question. For most magazines, the answer would be yes. For newspapers? Probably not; most newspapers are written to a fifth grade reading level. Magazines are written to an eleventh grade level or higher, depending on the genre. Professional Journals may be written to PhD graduate comprehension levels.
Also, all of those words are part of my 20 year old son's vocabulary and that of his peers. In fact, most of those words could be a vocab study list straight out of a high school AP English class. What wasn't in his AP English would have been in his HSCA or STEM classes.
Most of those words are also part of my vocabulary and have been since my high English and literature classes, when I discovered Roget's Thesaurus. They're not just writing vocabulary either. I use them in speech as part of my everyday lexicon.
