Back in 2003, my son was delivered five and half weeks early by emergency caesarean, after I'd been three and half weeks in the hospital with preeclampsia. We had insurance. It cost us $1100 a month. We still left the hospital with over $50K owed that insurance refused to cover.

That put us in a deep hole that just kept getting deeper. By 2009, we couldn't find a way through and ended up declaring bankruptcy.
