This poem was originally in response to someone railing against my implacable hold to the truth and to decent, respectful treatment of those I don’t agree with. Just because I don’t agree with someone is no reason to disrespect them. That I would not join in that disrespect with him opened me to quite vile castigation. I simply wrote this poem in response.

I got the biggest kick out of his ever-escalating rage at my non-retaliatory stance. It REALLY pissed him off! Am I a bad person for being so tickled that it sent him apoplectic?

It’s an attitude to conflict that I try to cultivate — admittedly with only spotty success. But, there’s actually a tremendous satisfaction in not allowing yourself to be overwhelmed by the conflict others seem to merrily inflict on your life. To just be unmoved… not angered in response… that is to “be the rain.

Would that I could always just “be the rain.” A drop of rain is minuscule — nothing. Liquid rain falls, gathers as it flows over and around, seeming incapable of moving anything. Yet, the world has been shaped by water, by rain. Like the chisel of a cosmic artist, it’s carved and shaped our world for uncountable eons.

Rain persists, it perseveres… always. Just as there is no life without rain, there can be no life without women. A tiny minority of our society is waging war against women, stripping our very humanity. They are nothing without us…
