Before a unique design, tailors and designers make a muslin form of for the client. From that, the final pattern is made. For example, when I designed a prom dress, I began with a muslin form made from the paper pattern. The muslin form was adjust and tweaked for the best fit for the client. That muslin form then became the final pattern.
