By shear numbers, there are more democrat and democrat-leaning independent voters than republican and conservative leaning voters. The numbers make up a clear majority. The problem is in the way our districting is managed and in the way the Electoral College apportions state blocs. We have a serious gerrymandering issue here that swings more power behind conservative heavy districts by carving up democrat heavy districts and shoving those bits under the conservative districts.

That's how, for example, we got the old maps in North Carolina that gave 10 districts to the GOP and only 3 to the Democrats – even though the numbers indicate democrat leaning voters may be as much as or more than 60% of the state adult population. You should have seen the tortured carve-outs the republican state legislature put into place. The just court ordered maps change that split from 10/3 to 8/6.

NC's gerrymandering issues mirror what's happening in all republican-led states. That's not to say Democrat-led states haven't tried it; but they rarely go as far and have little success getting it past the boards of election in their states.

NPR has a good article on it: https://www.npr.org/2016/03/10/469548881/north-carolinas-congressional-primaries-are-a-mess-because-of-these-maps

This Duke Chronicle article is pretty good detailing of the battle to undo the unconstitutional gerrymandering in North Carolina: https://www.dukechronicle.com/article/2022/03/north-carolina-state-congressional-maps-redistrict-gerrymander-gop-republican-democrat-roy-cooper-legislative

This article in The Fayetteville Observer explains the new map and how it mostly un-rigs the NC districting: https://www.fayobserver.com/story/news/2022/02/21/nc-elections-2022-redistricting-maps-fair-vote-gerrymandering-congress-ncga/6804181001/
