"Christian" literally means "follower of Jesus. Jesus spoke against the onerous legalism of the Pharisees and that love fulfills the law. Jesus Christ freed us from that onerous dogma.

Then, a former Pharisee named Paul comes along and interprets everything through his legalist lens. Two thousand years later, American evangelicalism is more Pauline than Christian.
