Cops are still racial profiling. Unfortunately, a lot of them are school cops doing it. It's against policy in Raleigh. But, my son was profiled for being Middle Eastern. The middle school cop told me to my face that he was a violence risk because he's Middle Eastern.
He'd stepped between a bully and his target. The target was a new Mexican immigrant boy. The white bully was swinging a punch. Gray blocked it with an Taekwondo block. That's all. Gray stood his ground, holding the defensive stance, but made no other move. The bully hurt his wrist on the block. This was the eyewitness of a teacher who was there.
But, the cop, who was not there, went after my brown boy instead of the white bully. The principal backed the cop. The bully and the immigrant kid both got a week in school suspension. Gray got a week home suspension, followed by two weeks in school suspension -- because he wouldn't sing the incident report claiming he was an aggressor. They added being disrespectful and uncooperative to pad the report, while I was sitting there because he wouldn't sign. But, I was not going to make him sign a lie.
I'd like to think a letter from me is what got the cop fired and the principal reassigned. My son certainly believes so. More likely though is that it contributed. I cannot have been the only parent of a minority child who reported them.
