Damn! "It provides an exception for an abortion that is necessary to save the life of a mother whose life is endangered by a physical (but not psychological or emotional) disorder, illness, or condition."
Guess all reasons that will be deemed "psychological or emotional" – like not wanting to endure a pregnancy resulting from incest or rape, or the risk of a debilitating disease or deadly deformity in the fetus, or a fetus found not to be compatible with life.
It would be back to the days when my mother was forced to carry a fetus until it was stillborn more than a month after it stopped growing, for more than a week after the heartbeat couldn't be detected. When it was finally stillborn, it had no facial openings – fused lips and eyelids and nostrils… perfectly shaped little ears, but no opening into the ear canal.
Also, "detectable heartbeat" times are getting shorter and shorter as technology advances. A lab in the UK actually developed a model embryo mimicking about 23 days gestation – in a Petri dish with a "detectable heartbeat."
And, how many "[women] who undergoes a prohibited abortion may not be prosecuted for violating or conspiring to violate the provisions of this bill" will include women who simply had a miscarriage or an accident resulting in one?
If the GOP gets back all three levers of federal power, that bill will come around again. And, its authors will alter it to go even further, to be even more rigid and punishing.
