Do you know what a "damn Yankee" is? It's an old Southern joke. The joke goes:

"Do you know the difference between and Yankee and a damn Yankee? A Yankee is someone who comes down South, spends all his money, then goes home. A damn Yankee is someone who comes down South, spends all his money, and will be damned if he's going home."

Folks used to trot that tired old joke out for my dad all the time becuase he stayed in the South.
