Exactly. And, the worst thing is, that hell they all cling to isn't even in their scripture. All those circles of hell and the torments imagined there are the primarily the product of the early Medieval mind, solidified in Dante's Divine Comedy. In their scripture, even the devil isn't in hell – Lucifer and the fallen angels (nephilim) walk the earth according to scripture.
Moreover, the scripture tells us that it is not itself the Word of God. It tells us first, "God is love" and second that "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." The Word existed before humanity, before language, before writing. God is love, ergo the Word is Love, by my interpretation. Then the same scripture goes on to tell us that Jesus is the Word – the Word (God who is love) made flesh.
Hell as we've imagined it outside scripture is humanity's petty craving for punitive retribution – and our small minded inability to see ourselves condemned to that retribution. It is the result of our inability to grasp that radical agape love for all. That is how we were meant to live with each other and with ourselves, to be living reflections of the image of God whois love – that's how I interpret what it means to be "created in the image of God."
