And Costume Design

I graduated from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor’s in fashion design in 1989. My favorite part of design was always realizing the concepts in my fashion illustration drawings. Much of my design training was in costume design in the theater department. I learned how clothing in costume design helps define a character, both for the actors and for the audience. That is why I employ fashion and costume design sensibilities in character illustrations.

Below is a character illustration, for a novelist friend of mine, in which I created an original concept for a men’s suite jacket. My philosophy of design is that the body is the canvas. For me, fashion is the ultimate form follows function Art genre.
