Female lions have been documented growing manes and acting like males. i have personally witnessed stallions mounting stallions. Many creatures including slugs, starfish, and frogs change sexes. All flowers produce BOTH male and female gametes (a mature haploid male or female germ cell which is able to unite with another of the opposite sex). Spotted hyenas present as hermaphrodite sexes. Even humans may be born intersex (what we used to call hermaphrodites); again, I personally knew an hermaphrodite when I was in art school. Also, a crocodile was just in the news for self-impregnating – i.e., she had not access to a male for mating.

Furthermore, there is science which shows there are multiple gender assignment events in utero beyond just the genitalia assignment. To begin, ALL zygotes are BOTH sexes until an in utero assignment gives distinct precedent to one or the other. In hermaphroditism, that distinction either does not happen or isn't completed. Then, the way the brain works regarding gender is effected in multiple maternal hormonal events. There is now ample scientific and biological evidence that being LGBTQ is not and never has been a choice – it is their biology at the most granular levels.

Finally, the LGBTQ in all their varied existences have always been part of humanity. We may have found newer ways and new terms by which to know them. But, their existence is not new – it is and always has been integral to humanity. Just because we didn't notice it before does not change that it is and always has been integral to humanity and in nature.

Thanks for reading.
