I actually knew someone who was intersex back in art school during the early 1980s. She told me herself that she was a hermaphrodite (the word they used back then). Her parents raised her as a son. But, when she was a teenager, she chose to present as a girl. They threw her out. Fortunately, she was welcomed by the Lumbee tribe of Robison County as one of the sacred two-spirit people. They even funded her education at my art school.
