I agree the reaction likely has links to ancient humans. I think there's a more modern element, especially for Black men who have historically seen their right even to family stripped away. Recall that in America, a slave could have his wife and/or children sold away from him. If his wife or daughter caught the eye of a rapist white man, a Black slave could do nothing to defend her. Black men were been disempowered culturally in myriad ways, even into modern times. And, we know from his personal history that, as a child and teen, he watched his mother's verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his own father, but powerless to do anything about it.
