I am a Christian and an American. I am NOT an "American Christian." There's no such thing as "an American Christian" in my estimation. There are only extremist American nationalists who cloak themselves in a veneer of religiosity they call "Christian." That word literally means "follower of Christ" – whom you so aptly point out they do not follow.

But, I feel compelled to point out that Christians believe Christ is God made flesh, the Son in the triune "God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit." God did not kill Jesus. Human religion aligned with human political power killed Jesus.

Religion is not God. Religion, far too often, attempts to contain and control, to force God into a mold of man's making. Jesus didn't tell anyone to go out and start a religion. He told us to love one another and to spread the good news that God's grace is for all.
