I don't believe it was planned, that he "waited for the right moment." He's far too thoughtful a person with a long history of reasoned and considered navigation through life's struggles. I believe he heard it, did what we program ourselves to do – dismiss it or "laugh it off and carry on." Because, that's what the world tells us to do – to just shut up and take it. But, as he replayed it in his thoughts, his outrage got the better of his normal measured choices.
He made an egregious choice – and there should be consequences, but those should be measured against his lifetime of decency.
