I don't know what growing zone you're in, but pecan trees are quite hardy and grow in zoned 5-9. However, in zone 5, they may never fully mature and are unlikely to produce nuts.

I actually have river birches in my yard, which came with the house. We loathe them. I call them "raggedy trees" because the bark is always sloughing off and they shed twigs and branches like mad! I mean, a bird lands in the tree and twigs fall off! Don't get me started on a breeze or a heavy rain. Oi!

Oh and stay away from ornamental Bradford Pear trees. Several of our neighbors had them in MO. Every big storm had two or more coming down.
