I don't know why anyone would have carpeting in a home they own. But, in apartments, landlords tend to insiste on carpeting for as sound-proofing between floors. We only ever had one apartment without carpeting and the lease had rules requiring tennants to sound-proof. That, naturally, meant rugs.
I don't mind rugs. I love my Perisan rugs my husband brought from Iran. You can take up a rug and pack it off to the cleaners. Carpeting just captures the filth and leaves you living in it.
