I find some of the things I've been through difficult to relate in my fiction and essays. But for me, poetry frees me to speak my pain. I've long said "poetry is soul song." Much of my earliest poetry, in large part, expresses my pain. If poetry is soul song, those old poems rise ragged and torn, dragging my soul from the darkness.
