I grew up in the American fundamentalist evangelical sect. They are quick to name evil and corrupting anything they don't understand or is not adhering to their rigid selective biblical literalism.

For example: At 16 years old, I went to the pastor of the my family's church one afternoon outside of services times. I told him I felt I had "a gift of empathy" and asked how to use it in the Lord's service. He said I was being tempted by witchcraft and gathered the church staff to "pray the devil out" of me.
