I had something similar happen with my husband's Persian friends. For our cocktail-style wedding reception, I spent days making treats of finger sandwiches and petit fours and delicate pasteries to serve with champagne and wedding cake. I did include beer and wine coolers as well; but, I planned the alcohol so that it would be unlikely any of 30 or so guests would get plastered in our tiny apartment. I chose this menu because our reception was in our tiny apartment and I neither had enough dinner dishes and nor chairs for everyone to sit down to a meal. But, his friends showed up with platters of Persian dishes. They also showed up with mass quantities of hard liquor.

[sigh]

I guess they meant well…
