I have to say, I don't think the queer panic ever went away. I think it was part of the impetus behind the bloodyminded grasping for power by rightwing Dominionist evangelicals. It was never just the single issue of abortion rights. It as about everything they saw as the corruption of "god's people" as they see white-identity America.

Sadly, they succeded in seizing power at the local level, then corrupted the system to push themselves into power at the national level.
