I have tried to avoid it in my household since my son was diagnosed on the spectrum and I read several articles linking it to behavioral issues. I wasn't wholly convinced, but it was a little thing. I already cook most everything myself beause of my own food allergies. I also stepped up my nutrional control when I learned I was pregnant. I gave up coffee and chocolate and stayed clear of it for the first three years; my son is my only child, and I was a stay-at-home mom, so I nursed for 3 years to give him the full advantage of that health benefit. In fact, my son didn't have soda or chocolate before he was almost four years old, after we moved near my parents; they thought he was being mistreated to be denied these things and slipped them to him, along with MacDonald's chicken nuggets – because, "C'mon, chicken nuggets are good for him." Eliminating red40 from his diet was one more thing I could do nutrionally for my son.
