I have wondered if humanity is convulsing after so much transformative change and if extremism is an expression of that. After decades of ever excelrating cultural change spurred by the Industrial Revolution changed the world, there followed growing civil rights movements for workers, women, and children. Then, there was a global pandemic and war, rushing in more transformation, followed by yet another world war that seemed to unite the world.
Since then, our society has undergone another ever excelerating cultural transformation from expanding civil rights, to the space age, to information age… each moving faster and more transformative than the last. We've seen the rise of terrorism and a new rise of authoritarianism around the world. Another global pandemic and now war again seeming to unite the world.
I recall someone once pointing out that we must remember, when we look at our oldest members, that they watched the world transformed from the horse and buggy to the space age. Like an elastic band, they stretched themselves to change and adapt, then they changed and and adapted again and again,… until elastic band snapped and they could change no more.
I hope our current transformation is more in that veing and the next generation will begin a new cycle of even greater progress, as the generations who followed those old horse-and-buggy-folk did.
