It broke all our hearts to have to put Gran in a nursing home for people with advanced dementia. We cared for her at home years beyond our ability to effectively do so. Even though we took it in turns every single day to take care of her, she kept wandering away and then didn't know how to get back home.

Her life was at risk — she even broke her hip one times. We all realized it was selfish to deny her the care we simply were not equipped to give her. She needed a qualified full time staff which it was impossible to provide at home.
