I keep my rescue inhalers all over the house. There's one in my bedside table, on at my desk, one in kitchen medicine cupboard, one in the couch cubby, and one in my purse. A full blown asthma attack can mean you can't make it from one end of the house to another. You need them to hand at all times.
However, before I had maintenance meds that actually worked, I went through a more than a dozen rescue inhalers every year, plus a box or two of nebulizer phials. I was puffing on the dang things every single day. And, I used the nebulizer regularly too. Those are all steroid treatments.
Now, with my Dulera and daily allergy med, I don't use my rescues more than a couple of times a month usually. I actually had to throw out most of a box of nebulizer phials because I didn't use them. My inhalers all expired over this past year while still over 80 doses each.
I know that seems like a waste – to throw out medicine. But, trips to the hospital and frequent pneumonia are a whole lot worse. I already barely survived a PE. I'm not taking chances by skipping my maintenance med.
Oh… and that PE made the insurance company stop trying to take away my Dulera. 🙄 Go figure.
