I live in NC. Things are more expensive than ever, but still more affordable than you've described. For instance, our gas prices are around $3.30/gal right now.

Our winters are fairly mild; but, we do get sweltering summers; July and August are particularly miserable. It's not unheard of for Thanksgiving to be around 80°F.
