I loved art school. And, I would have stayed through to my degree if I hadn't run out of money here in NC. However, I had been doing freelance art, like sign-painting and landscapes or portraits since junior high school (what we call "middle school" these days). And, I worked at least part time off and on in layout for newspapers and magazines into my thirties.

Still, I do understand the feelings you describe because I've felt like that too getting my degree in fashion design. I did go on to get a degree in a different state in fashion instead of art. But, that fashion degree – something I thought I'd wanted all my childhood – turned into the kind of weighted chore you describe of your experience in art school. It's really hard to find something you always loved isn't where you're supposed to be.

Later, I did go on to grad school for graphic design to update my artisan and print skillset to the digital age. But, I once I'd done that, I didn't feel the need to push myself for the Masters Degree; so, I don't know if grad school would have ended up feeling like my Bachelor's fashion program. I went to work in print magazine graphic design, where I remained until I had the audacity (phwh! 🙄) to get pregnant.
