I never heard of NHD. But, I watched my son and his peers hug all the time. Parting in carpool? Hug time. Meeting unexpectedly somewhere? Hug time. Arriving at your bud's house to hang? Hug time. It didn't' matter the gender, everyone seemed to readily hug each other.
