I read it as set piece in college. I love it, but I also didn't actively dislike it. My son read it in AP English Lit in high school; he and his peers universally loathed it. My sense is that it is un-relatable to modern young readers. The style of writing doesn't appeal to most young readers today. And, characters and world building don't speak to them. Perhaps it should not be assigned before college age, at least.
