I remember reading in my high school child development section of the homemaking class mother made me take about how pets may impart important life learning for children in care, empathy, and ultimately dealing with death.

My son is grown now and his only ever pet is still alive. But, he is watching our Gizzy going blind. He insists we can never change where any furniture sits or even move house because of it.
