I think the problem isn't really about the tax issue at all. It's that churches and religious organizations weild enormous political influence. And, that influence in recent years has been increasingly used to harm marginalized communities.

I know church outreach is necessary to local needs. For example, my church started and still supports the local pantry – and organized other local churches to help support the venture.

However, there are also churches supporting those anti-abortion faux-clinics and conversion therapy programs, in lieu of feeding the hungry or helping marginalized peoples.

I agree the tax issue isn't going to address those issues. The idea of giving tax breaks to organizations who use their influence to cause harm rankles – and people don't think through it rationally nor with correct evidence.
