I think this is us. People crave retributive punishment. We want the other punished horribly in the dark corners of our fractured hearts. The idea of hell isn't even particularly scriptural – it's certainly not in keeping with ancient Hebrew traditions. It's mostly a Mediaeval invention by folks like Dante.
