I think this kind of information makes a choice for us. My Iranian-American husband and I were recently discussing the looming threat of another Trump run for the White House. Things often seemed harrowing the first time; only financial constraints kept us from leaving. But now, thanks to the real estate market in our area more than tripling our home value, and how little we still owe on our mortgage, selling up would make such a move financially feasible. My husband could take early retirement and we could receive checks in Germany. He had assylum in Germany before he came to the States, and still has two brothers, some more distant relations, and friends there. If it comes to a point where it seems necessary, Germany looks to be the place for us. Our son is the only possible hindering factor for us now, beyond the language barrier for me. By 2025 (when Trump could take office), my son will be a fully licensed paramedic and could easily take those skills to Germany or anywhere else in Europe, I believe. As for the language barrier – while I may never be a great speaker of the language, that's what Rosetta Stone or Babel are for, right?

How shameful is it that we even feel the need to think like this? How can America continue to descend so far?
