I think what Hemingway meant by the quote is that we write because we must. Writing is life for us. It's the same with art. I don't "do art." It's not something I do, it's who I am.

I am an artist. I create artworks becuase I can't NOT create art.

Writing, for me, is an extension of my art. I write because I can't NOT write.
