I understand it's the read time that garners the payout. But, my understanding is that the claps impact the algorithm and how it pushes our writes into the feed. I haven't seen any such benefit. But, who knows.

For me, to be sure I give a full read by the platform's measurements, I run the robowhine. You can run it with the sound off on that window. The only problem is that I read quite a bit faster than the robowhine plays back; so, when I get to the bottom third of most articles, the robowhine keeps making the page jump back to where it is still plodding on.
