I wish more people realized how much effort it takes to be an ESL speaker. My immigrant husband gets treated like a moron half the time by Americans who barely speak their own English. At least half a dozen times a year, "snarkastic supercilious over-entitled browbeating wannabe bully" refuses to understand his accent and tells him something along the lines of, "This is America, learn to speak American."

Meanwhile, not only did my husband graduate from college on the National Dean's List, he speaks six languages – three of them he speaks and reads and writes fluently, including English.
