If you're writing for KindleUnlimited, they're sticking it to authors. If a reader buys a book of poetry, for example, and reads only a dozen poems, then KU pays the author only for what that much of the book. They do not refund the cost to the reader, though. KU keeps the rest of the book's price for themselves.
