I'm with you. We had a little café named Kaffeehaus in Missouri. One of the things our regulars liked, I believe, was coming in mornings and sitting quietly with classical music piping through the space. They'd come in for a $2 bottomless cup; we'd give them a mug which they could refill themselves without further human interaction. The students would sit there for hours.

We did have outdoor tables too, on the downtown sidewalk. The more gregarious morning folk tended to sit out there. Inside was more like a college studyhall in the mornings, but with coffee and breakfast.
