In giving of themselves, they gave gifts of symbolic meaning for themselves and their times. Gold was symbolic of a king. Frankincense was incense used in Temple worship and therefore symbolic of God (or, by some interpretations, of the high priest). Myrrh was a funery perfume used to annoint the dead, signifying His humanity. These are symbolic meanings for which the Magi would have held deep meanings.
