Today, at San Diego Zoo, keepers are encouraged to talk to the bears to detect a bear’s mood. A growl is a warning anywhere, but in the Polar Bear exhibit at San Diego Zoo, it is a direct message that the bear doesn’t want a particular keeper that day. Change the keeper—no more growls.
