It is good poetry. It is also still church doctrine among many fundamentalist and rightwing evangelical groups. It shaped their concept of the retrubutive hell with which they threaten all the time. As good as the poetry is, I'm unconvinced Milton intend it to be a treatise on free will. Rather, it seems to be a warning against exercising free will.
