It really does mess with your mind. Growing up in fundamentalist churches, I heard more about sin and hell than "God is love." That's just messed up. If I hadn't been going with my Gran to her old Methodist-Baptist church, I'm not sure I'd have learned that message.
And, since I know you're going to ask, I have no clue how they came to be "Methodist-Baptists." They were a damned sight more relaxed and welcoming than the Southern Baptists my parents attend back then. And, you couldn't begin to compare them to the increasingly fundamentalist Pentecostal denominations they joined. Every time they moved (my father was in the Navy), they picked a more conservative, more fundamentalist, more evangelical church.
