It seems to me that most of humanity has a very immuture idea of God. They want a god like them who craves retribution. And, humans want someone or something to blame, both for the things out of our control and for the consequences of things within our control. Humans need blame and control.

But, God is not in the tragedy or the consequences. God is in the response – or left out of the response. If your response to someone fleeing atrocity is to demand they return to that atrocity, then you've left God out of your response. If your response is to welcome the stranger and make them safe, God is in that response.

For me, the image of God is love, radical agape love through grace. So, every kindness… every heart of compassion and empathy… every act of selflessness and love… these are reflections of the image of God. I think that should be and is our intended purpose in life – to reflect the image of God who is love into the world.
