It's an accent key, for me. As in "T`Pol" (of Star Trek's the planet Vulcan fame). Also, on my Mac, I press the [`] and the [alt] key together, then release and hit the key of [e] and, viola, a grave (pronounced grahv) accent, as in "crème brulée.
