It's definitely a Southern thing. I grew up with that tradition.

…a few years later, on my way “back home” to West Virginia, along with the Indiana part of the clan. It was the Memorial Day holiday, a time when all who are able make their pilgrimage to West Virginia to ‘decorate the graves’.
